TOPIC: This is another Christmas love song, so you can extend your vocabulary in the topic. I would like to call your attention to a proverb in the song: "Once bitten twice shy", that is used for saying that someone will be careful about doing something again, or will be unwilling to do it again because they failed or were hurt the first time they did it..

GRAMMAR: Listening to the song we can go travelling round the "tenses". In English, when you talk about past events or actions that happened after one another, use "Past Simple" (verb+ed or 2nd form of irregular verbs), e.g.: "I gave you my heart...you gave it away". Talking about things that have happened in a period from the past until now or their results, use "Present Perfect" (have/has+3rd form of verbs), e.g.: "it's been a year", "Now I've found a real love". We use "Present Simple" (bare verb or infinitive, in 3rd person singular: verb+s) to talk about things that happen repeatedly or are true in general, e.g.: "I keep my distance but you still catch my eye", and use "Present Continuous" (be+verb+ing) when something is happening at the time of speaking, e.g.: "I'm hiding from you". "Future Simple" is used when you decide to do something at the time of speaking, e.g.: "I'll give it to someone special.".

First, try to understand the song just by listening to it, then check your understanding and extend your vocabulary from the lyrics below.

Wham! - Last Christmas

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognise me?
Well it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me

(Happy Christmas!) I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I Love You" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

(Oooh. Oooh Baby)

A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice
My God I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Oooh Oooh
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
(Gave you my heart)
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Next year
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
